This book of photos of Tel Aviv-Yafo, taken from different and exciting new angles, is a wonderful keepsake for lovers of the city, and a delightful present for tourists, friends and guests.
The book takes us through the narrow lanes, the squares, and the beautiful beaches of the white city, opening a panoramic view, allowing the reader to immerse himself within the pictures, intensifying his feeling of walking through the streets of Tel Aviv. Adding an extra flavour to the photos is the accompanying text, written by Ephraim Sidon, one of Israel's leading satirists.
Dana Friedlander, the photographer, took the photos both from the air and on the ground, using an innovative technique of 360 degrees in one frame, with a special camera, the only one of its kind in Israel.
This book was chosen by the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality to represent the city of Tel Aviv around the world, and is given by the Mayor to diplomats and VIPs visiting the city.

Foreword
Like Moliere's protagonist who suddenly found out that he has been speaking prose his whole life, and didn't even know it, so had found out many of the residents of Tel Aviv that they lived in "Bauhaus" buildings all their lives, without realizing it. The city that was dreamt up and built by dreamers, was suddenly covered in the most practical architecture of that period.
Only in Tel Aviv you can live in a street named today after someone you used to play "cops and thieves" with as a child. In a play by Nissim Aloni, who nowadays also has a street named after him, one of the protagonists says: "Such a small country and so much folklore". Only because Aloni is such a distinct resident of Tel-Aviv I allow myself to speak for him and say: "Such a young city and so much nostalgia".
That which Israeli painter and author Nachum Gutman did with the pen and the paintbrush, Dana Friedlander does with the camera. Her unique photographs help us understand that the power of a living city is also in its past.

העיר שנהגתה והוקמה על ידי חולמים, כוסתה לפתע באדריכלות המעשית ביותר של התקופה. הייקים שהביאו את הבתים שהפכו לסמלה של העיר לא בדיוק השתייכו ל"גדוד מגיני השפה" (אלא אם כן מדובר בשפה הגרמנית). "אני עוד לא עוזב..." היה אומר יקה בן שבעים כשנשאל: "למה אתה לא מדבר עברית?"
אין דבר מרתק יותר בעיר חיה ותוססת מאשר ניגודים. רק בתל-אביב גרים אנשים שבילדותם שיחקו "שוטרים וגנבים" עם האיש שעל שמו נקרא הרחוב שבו הם גרים. במחזה של ניסים אלוני, שגם הוא היום רחוב, אומר אחד הגיבורים: "ארץ קטנה וכל כך הרבה פולקלור". מכיוון שאלוני הוא תל-אביבי מובהק אני מרשה לעצמי לומר בשמו: "עיר צעירה וכל כך הרבה נוסטלגיה".
מה שעשה נחום גוטמן בציפורן ובמכחול, עושה היום דנה פרידלנדר במצלמה. כשאתה מוצא את עצמך חלק מצילום של שוק הכרמל, למשל, ומצליח לראות גם את מה שקורה מאחוריך, אתה מבין שכוחה של עיר עכשווית הוא בעבר שלה.
